Treating Addiction To Alcohol

When it comes to alcohol withdrawal, withdrawal seizures are a big concern. As more time passes and the person continues to drink, they increase their predisposition towards developing seizures from alcohol withdrawal. This is known as the kindling phenomenon, the idea that their risk for seizure increases every time they undergo withdrawal. There are no treatments recognized to slow down or prevent the process of kindling.

Medication for Alcohol Withdrawal

When it comes to alcohol withdrawal, there are some medications that can intervene to help support detoxification. Once the detoxification process is finished, patients are treated for their alcohol addiction. If the patient is having withdrawal symptoms that are mild to moderate, it is typically safe to provide them with outpatient treatment. With more severe cases, though, it is recommended that the person takes medication for alcohol withdrawal at an inpatient drug rehab.

When it comes to the seizures themselves, some medical measures will likely be put in place. Medication for alcohol withdrawal typically uses benzodiazepines such as Librium and Valium. These medications have a longer half-life and are a great medication for alcohol withdrawal. They help make the withdrawal process smoother and less likely to occur. When a patient has a hard time metabolizing medications, they may be given medications that are more immediate acting. These medications include Serax and Ativan. Another useful medication for anyone having a pre-existing seizure condition is Dilantin.
