Sleeping Pill Addiction

Sleeping pills are prescribed by physicians in order to help patients with certain medical and psychological conditions that make sleep difficult, if not impossible, to attain. While most sleeping pill prescriptions are for doses low enough that continued use should not push an individual to abuse the medication. However, some sleeping pills can cause tolerance and this can push patients to take more than the prescribed amount. This can have a few negative side effects, one of which is sleeping pill addiction or abuse. Once an individual becomes dependent on higher doses, or even prescribed doses, to fall and stay asleep, the danger is that increased amounts circulating in the body will actually have the opposite effect.

Taking sleeping pills regularly will cause a deterioration in brain activity during waking hours. This can affect memory, focus and physical activity levels. Several studies have also noted that individuals who rely on sleeping pills are more likely to die than those not taking sleeping pills at all. Some medical professionals have questioned the effectiveness of sleep aids long term, and have clients now struggling with rebound insomnia. Individuals with diagnosed conditions such as sleep apnea and those over the age 65 should not be prescribed sleep aids. Those with sleep apnea put themselves at risk for brain damage due to dropping in oxygen levels, and in rare cases, death.
