Drug Addiction

A drug intervention is a process used to persuade an addict to seek help in overcoming their addiction. This process typically involves family members, friends, and other important people in the person’s life. For the intervention to be successful, it needs to nonconfrontational and offer the addict the help they may need to begin the process of recovery.

Is it Necessary?

Many people who struggle with addiction have a hard time recognizing just how bad their problem is. They may not realize how problems with their work, health, and relationships are directly related to their risky behaviors. In fact, most addicts deny the fact that many of their problems are caused by their addiction. Instead, they tend to blame others for the circumstances in their lives. A drug intervention can help them break through the denial so they can clearly see how their drug use is affecting those close to them.

Finding the Right Time

Many people believe in addict must hit rock bottom before seeking help. Research has shown this is not true. In fact, it is better to intervene earlier before the addict sustains damage from their addiction. The best time for treatment is directly after the drug intervention so the person can immediately get help once they agree to it. This means a treatment program spot should be secured and a bag packed for the addict before the drug intervention happens.

Using a Professional

Staging a drug intervention for a loved one can be a difficult process. It may be tempting to do the drug intervention alone, since it may seem like a simple conversation with a loved one. Remember, though, that there is a lot riding on this conversation. The person you are confronting may become angry or violent when they are confronted.

When you hire a professional to do a drug intervention, they will ensure the process runs smoothly. They have done this before and understand how to talk with an addict.

A typical drug intervention is full of emotions. A professional can help the conversation to stay on track. The professional interventionist’s sole purpose is to help the addict seek the help they need, so they can help the participants get past their emotions and keep the focus where it needs to be, on the long-term health of the addict.

Preparing the Participants for Success or Failure

If the drug intervention is successful, the addict will enter a treatment program immediately. It is unlikely that the addict will be motivated to get the help needed at this point, so make sure the plan of action is laid out well ahead of time. A professional interventionist can help the family set up a plan and prepare the preliminary arrangements.

Having everything ready will make the transition easier for the addict.

If the drug intervention fails, everything is not lost. Remember, though, that anyone who told the individual during the intervention that certain behaviors would no longer be tolerated needs to follow through. The professional interventionist can help the individuals with follow through on these promises if the addict rejects treatment.
With the addict being told how they are behaviors affect their family and friends negatively, a seed may be planted that could take weeks or months to bloom.
